Woodcarving SIG updates

AUGUST MEETINGS:

Wednesdays, August 6, 13, 20, 27: Daytime Meetings, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Monday, August 11: Special Evening Meeting, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

All meetings held at the home of Paul Volpp. Call for directions.

AUGUST CLASS PROJECT: We’ll continue on the Chain and Ball-in-Cage. If you finish the short chain, why not start on a longer one? I’ll have blanks for the larger size as well as the small one. It will be a nice relaxing summertime project – and perfect for the beginning carver.

DEBBE EDWARDS – HORSE HEAD SEMINAR: Still room to sign up for our second (and final) seminar of 2008. Cost of the seminar is $150 plus the cost of the blank ($28 for a basswood blank, $33 for a butternut blank.) Size of the blank is about 9x9x4 inches.

Dates for the seminar are Friday thru Sunday, October 31-November 2. Most working folks will get Nevada Day (Oct 31) off so that should work out well to get our seminar in. Time will be 9 am to 5 pm each day.

This is a great project for a new or novice woodcarver. The finishing is easy - a 'natural' finish, like Deft or linseed oil. Wood-burning and painting are optional, not required.

If you are interested, please send a deposit of $50 to hold your spot.

See you next time,

Paul Volpp, 775-853-3432

No meeting on Wednesday, September 3.

All meetings held at the home of Paul Volpp. Call for directions.

SEPTEMBER CLASS PROJECT: Halloween Black Cat. You’ll have to take a look at the attached photo to see what this project is all about. It’s really pretty simple to carve but makes a nice fall display item. We should be able to finish this one easily in a month. We’ll have all the supplies – twine, pumpkin, and whiskers – to complete the project. Cost for the blank and supplies is $10. Thanks to John Haynes for this idea.

OCTOBER CLASS PROJECT: Our class project for October through December will be a nativity scene. We’ll be using a book by Shawn Cipa called Woodcarving the Nativity in the Folk Art Style as a guide. I will order a book for you if you are interested. Let me know by September 10. Your cost for the book is $12. I’ll have blanks for the projects as well – I’ll let you know the cost as soon as I cut a few out.
